The Empire is a beautiful converted art deco Victorian Theatre with a 70m sq stage with extensive stage wings for production/mixing points. There is a full size cinema screen above the stage for projections/video mixing. The original private boxes have been retained as well as a standing balcony all the way round for stage viewing.
The Empire is located in the town centre right next to the town hall, Train and bus stations are both 2 minutes away.
By Car, From A19, Take A66 Middlesbrough, Then take third slip road (one after the signpost st.hildas / town centre), 3rd exit from this roundabout, 1st exit from mini roundabout, follow the road round to the right.
The 'Play' club night held in The Empire has established itself as the biggest indie/alternative club night in the N.E. and regularly has audiences of 1000+. There are 3 rooms of music to choose from, hair flinging punk and metal in 'The Gods', Hip Hop& Funk in the first floor leisure lounge and full on indiefunksoulandpunk sounds in the main room/live area.
Who has played? Since we opened in 1991 most of the worlds finest djs and producers have performed and indeed still do, djs like Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo, Tiesto, Paul van Dyke to name but a few. MTV, clubavision etc have all filmed at the club and several music videos have shot here too. Bands like The Darkness, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors, Kasabian, Scissor Sisters, BRMC, Fun Lovin Criminals, Goldie Lookin Chain, Bloc Party, Dead 60s to name but a few, have all performed here in the last 2 years.
