The UK's newest gallery of modern and contemporary art. mima showcases an internationally significant programme of fine art and applied art from the 1900 to the present day. Exhibitions change on a quarterly basis and include the annual Collection Show, which concentrates on Middlesbrough's outstanding collection of fine art, ceramics and contemporary jewellery. In addition an offsite programme of events and exhibitions will provide visitors the chance to engage with art in alternative surroundings. The gallery has 5 exhibition spaces, informal spaces, two dedicated collection stores, a conservation studio, education suite, auditorium, roof terrace, garden, cafe and shop. Situated in the town centre between the Carnegie Library and Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's sculpture, 'Bottle of Notes'. The gallery has easy access by car, public transport and foot.
The modern and contemporary art collection comprises of well over 1,000 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture which include works by Ben Nicholson, David Bomberg, LS Lowry, Stanley Spencer, Gwen John, David Hockney and Bridget Riley as well as many young internationally acclaimed artists. The contemporary international jewellery collection consists of both precious and non-precious jewellery. Examples from the collection have been featured in many major publications on the subject and have toured widely. The 20th century British ceramics collection is also one of the most important of its kind in the country, charting the studio ceramics movement from the 1920s to the present day.
