The UK’s newest gallery of modern and contemporary art opens with Draw, Conversations Around the Legacy of Drawing.

This inaugural exhibition shows drawing by some of the most significant artists of the 20th century in relationship to works by a number of outstanding contemporary artists.

Artists featured are:
Pablo Picasso – Chantal Joffe
Henri Matisse – Chris Ofili
Marcel Duchamp – Ceal Floyer
Jackson Pollock – DJ Simpson
Francis Bacon – Damien Hirst
Andy Warhol – Gavin Turk
Joseph Beuys – David Musgrave

Situated in the town centre between the Carnegie Library and Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s sculpture, ‘Bottle of Notes’. The gallery has easy access by car, public transport and foot.

The modern and contemporary art collection comprises of well over 1,000 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture which include works by Ben Nicholson, David Bomberg, LS Lowry, Stanley Spencer, Gwen John, David Hockney and Bridget Riley as well as many young internationally acclaimed artists.

The contemporary international jewellery collection consists of both precious and non-precious jewellery. Examples from the collection have been featured in many major publications on the subject and have toured widely.

The 20th century British ceramics collection is also one of the most important of its kind in the country, charting the studio ceramics movement from the 1920s to the present day.

Available activities: Illustrated talks, artist led workshops, art loans box 'Art on Tour' craft based sessions, in school sessions. We are happy to discuss new ways of working with schools or groups of schools on innovative art based projects.
