Middlesbrough Big Wheel

The 40m Wheel in Centre Square opened on Thursday December 3,  2009.

It has 30 glass-sided and climate-controlled observation pods, each carrying up to eight people with a specially recorded on-board commentary.

The Wheel has become a striking addition to Middlesbrough’s skyline, clearly visible from the A19 flyover and illuminated at night.

Rides will last around 12 minutes and feature three revolutions of the Wheel, affording passengers fantastic views across Middlesbrough and beyond.

The Wheel is also creating up to 20 local jobs for the duration of its stay, and a decision to extend beyond the festive period will be considered in due course.

Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon said: “We’re very pleased to have been able to work with Great City Attractions to bring the Wheel of Middlesbrough to the town in time for Christmas.

“The construction process has attracted a lot of attention and I know people are looking forward to getting on board and enjoying some spectacular views of the town.

“It’s a welcome addition to the Middlesbrough skyline and can only add to the town’s reputation as a first rate destination for entertainment and leisure.”
